Beautiful dark terracotta Buddhist votive tablet depicting
a standing Buddha making the teaching mudra with his left hand.
*
This posture recalls a legend according to which one day
while the Buddha was away for 3 months visiting his mother,
King Pasentikosol (a fervent disciple of the Buddha) had it sculpted
a life-size sandalwood statue of the Buddha
and had placed it in his residence to remember his Master.
When the Buddha returned, the King wanted to show him the statue,
but as soon as the Buddha entered the room where she was, the wooden statue
sandalwood rose from his seat to pay homage to the Buddha,
who then raised his left hand to signal him to sit down again.

On the back of this votive tablet, we discover five images of Buddha
in stylized meditation postures.
