Carborundum, also known as silicon carbide, is a synthetic material created in the late 19th century for industrial uses. It is characterized by its black or dark appearance, often iridescent, with spectacular rainbow-like reflections. These reflections are due to the artificial crystalline structure of the material and the interaction of light with its surface.

In Thailand, this material is frequently sold in amulet markets (and online) as « rainbow lek lai. » Many vendors don’t hesitate to offer it at exorbitant prices, passing it off as a sacred, mysterious substance or one from legendary caves, when in fact it is a perfectly identifiable industrial product.
