Rare and authentic Thai medal consecrated by the very venerable Luang Phor Waen Sujino of Wat Doi Mae Pang (Chiang Mai), issued in 2520 BE (1977), on the occasion of the Chana Suek series (« Victory over the enemy »).
This medal is an iconic piece, highly sought after by collectors and worshippers in Northern Thailand. It reflects the deep faith placed in Venerable Luang Phor Waen, renowned for his meditation, austere lifestyle, and spiritual powers.
In the context of Luang Phor Waen Sujino , and more generally in Thai Buddhism , the expression “Chana Suek” (ชนะศึก) can be interpreted in two ways — and often both are valid at the same time:
In 1977, some series of “Chana Suek” medals were created in a spirit of moral support to the army or the nation, often in a military context or protection against civil or external conflicts (e.g., Cold War, tensions with neighboring countries, internal guerrillas, etc.).
In this case, « the enemy » can refer to the opposing armed forces , or more symbolically any threat to peace, the security of the kingdom, the faith or the people.
For Luang Phor Waen, a monk highly respected for his meditation practice , the real “enemy” is within . It is:
Anger
Greed
Ignorance
The ego
The « kilesa » (mental impurities)
So, “Chana Suek” = Victory over the internal enemy .
That is, on the mental scrolls that prevent liberation.
And this is entirely consistent with the teaching of Luang Phor Waen, which embodies a silent asceticism , a pure practice, far from worldliness.
